Reading Curriculum

FROM CHRISTIAN LIGHT

Reading well is an essential life skill. Christian Light’s reading curriculum helps your student develop reading and thinking skills needed for today’s world.

I am overjoyed and so pleased with this reading curriculum. The kids love it too!

Introduction

TO READING

Goals for Christian Light Reading include the following:
  • To implant Biblical principles for living.
  • To foster a lifelong love of reading.
  • To increase comprehension and analytical skills.
  • To promote swift silent reading and smooth oral reading with full comprehension.
Reading, listening, speaking, and writing are the basic skills of a language. Students need language skills for every subject on every level throughout their schooling. However, the mechanical ability of reading is of little value without the ability to comprehend what words, sentences, and paragraphs mean.
Christian Light Reading curriculum develops students’ reading comprehension, enlarges their vocabulary, and increases their general knowledge. Exercises strengthen students’ ability to do the following:
  • Recall story facts
  • Summarize information
  • Make inferences and predictions
  • Draw conclusions
  • Analyze word choices
  • Evaluate what they read
  • Make personal applications.

Elementary

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Christian Light’s reading course consists of much more than stories and fill-in-the-blank exercises. Good stories and poems are the foundation of the reading curriculum. Children love the stories, and parents love the character traits they teach.
In Grades 1-5, each story has two lessons. The student reads the story silently the first day and reads it aloud the next day. On both days the student answers questions in the LightUnit. In Grades 6-8, each story has one lesson.
Grades 1 & 2 require teacher involvement, with students working more independently in Grades 3-8.
In Grade 1, students begin the I Wonder reader after completing the Learning to Read course.
Grades 2 & 3 each include ten LightUnits—a full year of work with Reading class every day.
Grades 4-8 include five LightUnits each year for a lighter workload. You can have Reading class two to three times a week or for one full semester.
In Grades 7 and 8, the course moves from a comprehension-based approach to more of a literary study. Students in these grades interpret and analyze literary elements and techniques, practice types of writing, and learn to think critically.

High School Literature

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Christian Light offers two high school Literature courses.
Literature I
This course is based on the literature textbook Perspectives of Life in Literature. Sections include short stories, poetry, biographies, selections on Christian victory, and allegories.
Available in either LightUnits or worksheet format. Worksheets require more teacher involvement.
Literature II
This course is based on the literature textbook Perspectives of Truth in Literature, which includes an anthology on truth, poetry, essays, and Scripture selections.

Course Components

OVERVIEW

LightUnits

LightUnit workbooks in each grade teach new concepts and provide student exercises. The LightUnits are numbered 01 through 10 (for example, 301 through 310 for Grade 3) or 01 through 05 for courses with only five LightUnits.
LightUnits are completed one at a time in consecutive order. Each LightUnit, except in Grade 1, contains two quizzes and one test.

Worksheets

Reading Worksheets are an alternative to LightUnits. They are currently available only for Grades 2 and 3. Unlike LightUnits, worksheets do not include review exercises. Worksheets are suited for classroom schools where a teacher is more actively involved in providing instruction and review.

Readers

Each grade has its own reader that includes all the stories and poems needed for that course. Grade 2 includes two readers. The stories in the readers are high-quality, well-written selections that teach good character and Biblical values. Many of the stories were originally published in readers from the early to mid-1900s. Each reader is illustrated in color.

Teacher's Guides

Grades 1-8 feature Teacher’s Guides with answers filled in on student pages. Teacher’s Guides also provide teaching instructions, review examples, oral reading activities, story introductions, discussion questions, suggestions for additional books to read, and alternate tests.

Answer Keys

Grades 3-8 also offer Answer Keys that show student pages with answers filled in. These Answer Keys are optional if you use the Teacher’s Guides. These Answer Keys allow students to check their work without accessing answers to quizzes and tests.
