  • Grade 1

    Sunrise 2nd Edition

    Language Arts 1 teaches grammar, punctuation, communication skills, writing, spelling, and penmanship. Students expand their phonetic skills as they learn about vowel sets, consonant and vowel blends, consonant digraphs, prefixes, and suffixes. They work with words, phrases, and sentences.

    Language Arts 1 correlates with Learning to Read and Reading 1. Students begin Language Arts LightUnit 101 when they begin Learning to Read LightUnit 105 Lesson 5. Penmanship exercises begin in Language Arts LightUnit 105, and spelling begins in LightUnit 106. LightUnits 107-110 include creative writing exercises.

    The course consists of ten LightUnit workbooks and a Teacher’s Guide. Phonics cards (available in two sizes) are a valuable teaching tool for introducing and reviewing phonics sounds.

  • Grade 2

    Sunrise 2nd Edition

    Language Arts 2 integrates grammar, spelling, and penmanship into one easy-to-use course. It completes the phonics program begun in first grade. Use Christian Light’s Language Arts Diagnostic Test to place students new to the curriculum.

    Lessons begin with teacher-directed oral review, followed by new concepts introduced in small increments. Lessons also include a section that reviews material from previous lessons. Students learn about nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, capitalization, punctuation, and how to identify sentences and phrases. Students begin to learn to write cursive. Each LightUnit contains a creative writing assignment. The three spelling lists in each LightUnit include fifteen words each.

  • Grade 3

    Sunrise 2nd Edition

    Language Arts 3 integrates grammar, spelling, and penmanship into one easy-to-use course. Use Christian Light’s Language Arts Diagnostic Test to place students new to the curriculum. After you introduce each lesson’s new concept, students can work independently on the lesson. New concepts are not tested until they have been reviewed at least three times.

    Students identify nouns, verbs, adjectives, and sentence subjects. They diagram sentences and work with language mechanics such as punctuation, pronunciation, capitalization, and subject-verb agreement. Students learn to use contents pages, indexes, dictionaries, and encyclopedias. Each LightUnit includes a creative writing lesson. The three spelling lists in each LightUnit include fifteen words each.

  • Grade 4

  • Grade 5

New concepts usually are not tested until they have been reviewed at least three times. The English Handbook is an optional reference book for the course.

    In addition to working with grammar, language mechanics, and sentence diagramming, students complete a book study of But Not Forsaken, a story of refugees after World War II. Creative writing assignments are included in the LightUnits. These assignments refer to the book On Teaching Writing, which is an optional resource. The three spelling lists in each LightUnit include twenty words each.

  • Grade 8
