Back in the 1400s, beggars had come to the Poverty Gate in the castle wall for handouts. Now in 1805, Napoleon's army needs men. Twelve-year-old Samuel and his family find that when soldiers come, the well-concealed Poverty Gate provides a splendid hiding place.
